Corps Member Plants 500 Trees To Combat Climate Change In Bayelsa
Mr. Otto Chimenem, a Batch A Corps member from Rivers State has embarked on the planting of over 500 trees to combat deforestation and environmental degradation in the Niger Delta region.
Mr. Chimenem, while addressing the officials of the Bayelsa State Ministries of Environment and Special Projects, Nigerian Air Force, Nigerian Police Force, Nigerian
Security and Civil Defense Corp, United Bank of Africa, PEDCART.COM and students contributed as volunteers.,said the idea behind the initiative was his contribution to save the Niger Delta environment.According to Chimenem, Bayelsa is one of the states that generate the highest number of woods for furniture, stressing that if trees are not replaced, that is maximum deforestation.
“Are there measures put in place to ensure those trees are replaced? I keep wondering about it and coming into the town, I realized Yenagoa is more like a fallow land, no much trees around and I decided to do something about it.”
“I always believe that that change we seek in our environment begin with us. You are the change we seek for a new environment. If not you, who? If not now, when? If not here, where?”
“Some months ago, we learn that intense heat of the sun killed some people in India. You can see that Yenagoa is a very hot place and that is because of the rate of deforestation here. ”
“The project is “Tree Planting for Climate Change” because our climate has been degraded by carbon gases and trees practically have a way of absorbing carbon.”
“So planting more trees would mean reducing the carbon that gets to deplete the ozone layer. I had to see that 500 trees are planted in Peace Park”.
In response, the Director, Parks and Garden, Mrs. Roseline Princewell said it is a special day for the Bayelsa State government, adding that the benefit of tree planting cannot be overemphasized.
Also speaking, the Air Officer commanding Mobility Command, Nigerian Air Force represented by Air Commander J. N. Umaru stressed the need to attach importance to the environment, encouraging Bayelsans and Nigerians to inculcate the habit of planting trees.
The State Commandant, Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps, Desmond Agu said he was humbled to contribute to the tree planting with the zeal to be identified as friend of the earth.
The CEO, PEDCART. COM, Mr. Martin Eyomiowei said he love the idea of Otto Chimenem and the whole contributions by the volunteers, saying it is a one step development and a very good one indeed.
Also, the Branch Manager, UBA, Swali said the whole exercise was to preserve the mother earth, noting that their own contribution was to support Otto Chimenem in making sure his project was feasible.
