Army begins probe into ‘missing’ 83 soldiers .


The Nigerian Army has kicked off investigation into how 83 of its troops went missing after a Boko Haram attack recently. Premium Times reports that the Army, which has also replaced the commanding officer who was among the 83 missing soldiers, wants to understand what went down at the scene of the attack before the disappearances.It quoted top
military officials as saying that the enquiry was instituted by the Nigerian Army 8th Task Force Division in Monguno, Borno state and members of the panel are Nigerian Army 8th Division Provost Group which is also in Monguno. Meanwhile, Premium Times reports that there is huge tension among military personnel and family members of soldiers stationed at the location of the attack in Gishar, Borno state near the Nigerien border because the military has locked down the area.
Soldiers and families alike are unable to contact their loved ones because even the telecoms system has been shut down. “There is tension and apprehension in the battalion,” one of our sources said. “There is no phone network service in the location. Hence, most of the families do not know who is missing or not.”
One Captain Long John is now acting as the commanding officer because he’s the next most senior officer to Colonel K. Yusuf, the commanding officer who is also missing. NAIJ.com recalls that soldiers attached to 145 Task Force Battalion were attacked by Boko Haram insurgents while manning a station in Gashigar, Borno State, near the border with the Republic of Niger on October 17. After the attack, an unconfirmed number of soldiers died, some drown in the Yobe River and several others are still missing. Meanwhile, within the last 48 hours, 32 Boko Haram informants have been arrested according to information released by the Nigerian Army. These 32 arrested collaborators and saboteurs comprise of two army officers, two soldiers, two police officers and 26 civilians. Spokesperson of the army SK Usman confirmed the arrest of the collaborators.
